TU Delft student in final Shell Ideas 360

unipump

Have TU Delft student Januardy Djong and his teammate Dimas Priawan (UT Twente) won the  Shell Ideas360 competition? We will find out soon. As finalists they have presented their ideas to the jury on 14 May, and today, 15 May the winner will be announced during the Shell Eco Marathon in Rotterdam. With their modular UniPump they are certainly strong contenders.

Januardy , who is from Indonesia, is now pursuing a Master in Engineering and Policy Analysis. Januardy and Dimas had already been working together for a couple of years at Indonesian non-profit organisation Scholar4id. They came up with their idea when they met a small-scale farmer in need of a frugal solution for irrigation. They designed the UniPump, an affordable irrigation pump to improve productivity, crop yield and income.

According to Januardy, taking part in the competition has been a great learning experience, especially having to juggle between working on this idea and his studies. He really values the opportunities he had to talk with experts from Shell, who helped the team to improve their design. And the best news is that American NGO Start with Water has got in touch with Januardy and Dimas. They would like to implement the UniPump in Sumbawa, one of Indonesia’s islands most at risk from droughts and crop starvation.
