Choosing your minor: no stress at the Minor Event

Minor Event 2015

Last week we spoke with Jan and Sander (both IDE students) about how they chose their minor. Jan opted to stay in Delft for his minor, while Sander went abroad to experience new cultures and other types of education. See last week’s post here.

Today we talked to Jesse and Vera (TPM and EEMCS students respectively) about how they chose their minor. Jesse opted to do an internship for his minor, while Vera went to Amsterdam to experience courses at a different university.

Choosing the right minor can be difficult. With loads of options, it can be tricky to say what would be most valuable for you: deepening your knowledge on a certain topic in your field, broadening your horizons outside that field, going abroad for a while or even doing an internship in stead. It’s all possible, but don’t stress! At the Minor Event on 23 April at the Auditorium, you’ll find out more about our TU Delft Minors.

An internship during his minor

‘I just did not know what subject to choose for my bachelor project.’ Jesse wanted to experience what he liked most about the building sector. ‘Real Estate and Housing, Architecture, Building Technology or Urbanism, there were a lot of options. I found a solution to my problem: an internship at a contractor (BAM Utiliteitsbouw).’ This way, Jesse got to work with every stakeholder throughout the process, allowing him to see the different professions in practice. ‘And besides, it was very cool to be around the construction site often!’

Throughout his internship, Jesse learned what he wanted to study and potentially do later on in his career; ‘I got some real life experience and afterwards knew what to do: I am now studying in the Construction Management and Engineering Master programme!’

Experiencing a different field

‘Most of the minors offered in Delft are very technical, so I decided to broaden my horizon and learn more on some of the social sciences.’ Since Vera didn’t want to move, she opted to go to a city within a reasonable distance of travel. Between those cities, Amsterdam came out on top: ‘The study program of Political Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam spoke to me most because it had some theoretical courses as well as some project work, it really broadened my horizon.’ Aside from the new field of academics, Vera got to know herself a little bit better too: ‘What I also found to be quiet interesting, was the contact with other students studying political sciences and other social sciences. We sometimes had very different approaches to problems, and it was interesting to see what their views were on mathematics and its applications in society.’
