Next week might be the time to skip your social drink

Students in general, but especially first year students, do not have the healthiest reputation. “Studeren is combineren”, and therefore, “4 hours of sleep a night is plenty”. Since you never learned how to cook for yourself, you often end up with a pizza from the fridge, and the 200m walk from your house to the supermarket (with a crate of beer in each hand) perfectly counts as sport. You’re studying at a highly ranked university

Print

Halfway in September the Times Higher Education rankings came out. TU Delft ranked at place 59! The previous year our university was 66th place, which means we moved up 7 places. Happy days.

Besides the general ranking of THE, the TU Delft also made three subject rankings. In the list of Engineering & Technology the university came in 20th, we came 35th in the list of Computer Sciences and in the new list for  Physical Sciences TU Delft ranked place 58.

THE Ranking

On a yearly basis THE generates a general Times Higher Education World Ranking between 980 universities worldwide. Within this ranking, universities are compared based upon 5 indicators: research, education, citation, internationalisation and income from the industry. Changes within the methodology of ranking, have changed the outcomes of the rankings over the years.

Rankings

The THE-Ranking, the Shanghai-ranking and the QS-ranking together form the leading university rankings worldwide. All three rankings have different methodologies with their own benefits and shortcomings. Within the QS Ranking this year the TU Delft ranked 62 compared to 64 last year.

Take a look at Times Higher Education Ranking for additional information.

Have you ever read an article with the word  ‘ranking’ in it so many times? This must be a record.. Someone should make an article ranking.

CANCELLED: Cultural Professor 2016

Due to personal circumstances, Griet Op de Beeck, the cultural professor 2016 of the TU Delft has decided to pull back. Unfortunately this means that CP@TUD 2016 is cancelled.

Griet Op de Beeck would have started as CP at TU Delft with an opening lecture in the Aula at 7 October. In the masterclass she would have worked with students to produce a written sample of the inhabitants of Delft. Due to this cancellation all planned activities have also been cancelled.

High tech lecture halls

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsrruD_3at4

During summer you might have noticed it, as the university has upgraded 60 lecture rooms on campus with the newest and awesome high tech audiovisual facilities. Several ‘four quadrant’ screens and projectors have been installed, enabling teachers to use the smart boards to show several subjects at once. You can find these screens in the EEMCS faculty for now, but in the next years all 150 lecture rooms will be provided with this new technology.

New education spaces on campus in Building 26

During this summer two new education rooms have been realised on campus in Building 26 (de bouwcampus). In your timetable this location is named 26, with rooms hall 1 or hall 2. We can imagine you might need some help in finding your way to this new education building. So, we made some brief instructions:

Building 26 is located south of Civil Engineering, Van der Burghweg 1. See also the campus map.

Hall 1 is located in the separate building to your right, seen from the main entrance. This building has its own entrance. Hall 2 is located on the ground floor of the main building. From the entrance you need to cross the hall straight on. After passing the elevators you will find hall 2. This hall is named ‘Auditorium’ on the signage.

We hope you enjoy the new education spaces!building 26 hall 1

We proudly present: Academic year 2016-2017

We hope you enjoyed your holidays. Traveled the world maybe, enjoyed the sun (and the rain if  you stayed in The Netherlands). Most importantly of all: did you not think about your studies for some weeks? No? Well we did! But now the academic year is once again about to start and we have some interesting things that we would like to share with you:

1. My TUDelft app

Right when the holidays started, the TU Delft finished it’s app for mobile devices! We wrote a small post about it then, but want to point it out to you once again, because it is so darn handy. In one quick overview you can see your upcoming activities, your schedule and your latest results. So don’t hesitate and quickly download it from the app store or google play!

2. New food at our campus

fellowship

The university is working on new food and beverages offerings on campus. This summer the food market in the Fellowship and the Coffee-star in the library (re)opened! The Coffee-star has grown and offers you more spaces to take a seat and enjoy your drink, panini or healthy snacks! The Foodmarket in the fellowhip, in the southern part of our campus, houses three new places to serve you your breakfast, lunch and diner! La Casa Kitchen, serves honest and delicious mediterranean food, a Satebar serves you the best Indonesian dishes and at Soep&Ballen you can enjoy organic dishes made following old-fashioned recipes.

3. New Applied Sciences building in use

The new building for the Applied Sciences faculty at the south side of the campus is finished and already in use. Lots of departments have taken their place in the bright and shiny new environment designed by Ector Hoogstad Architects. If you haven’t been there yet it is definitely worth a visit.
