Dutch cycling record in Nevada dessert
Congratulations to the Human Power Team! Cyclist Aniek Rooderkerken rode their high-tech aerodynamic bicycle, the VeloX 7, and won the World Human Powered Speed Challenge.
With 121,5 km/h she broke the Dutch record for female cyclists. The previous record of 114 km/h was set in 2014 by Ellen van Vugt. Not only Rooderkerken ended up on the podium, also her team member Iris Slappendel managed to cycle herself to the second place, with 115 km/h.
The bicycle in which Rooderkerken was able to cycle this fast has been designed by the Human Power Team, which consists of students of the VU Amsterdam and TU Delft. Using simulations and wind tunnel tests, they focused upon designing a bicycle that would encounter as minimum air resistance as possible. And as its seems, with a first and second place, we could say: Job well done!

Join the Harvey Hackathon
On the 13th of September, the Delft Harvey Texas Research Team organises the Harvey Hackathon. A major data-collection and problem-solving event led by Prof. dr. Bartel van der Walle that will take place at the Delft Science Center. Are you interested in learning how you can apply your knowledge to increase the understanding of disaster response at TU Delft? Join the event and register online!
Students with all backgrounds are invited to explore how they can make impact with their expertise. During the event participants will work by choice individually or in groups to gather, analyze or visualize data from the recent Harvey disaster. Prior knowledge or experience is not required. During the day, there is enough room to learn from experienced researchers and peers in your group. Moreover, during the ‘Breakout Sessions’ you have the opportunity to learn about what TU Delft is already doing in this field.
Why join?
This hack-a-thon is a fun, social and informal way for you to get more familiar with the research that is ongoing at TU Delft. Throughout the day there are many opportunities to not only gain insights from researchers at our university, but also to provide and share your own insights with them. Moreover, you can use the event to broaden your network and find graduation topics, internships, or a job!
Where and when?
The event will start at 9:00 and free coffee, tea, cookies and lunch will be provided! The event will end at 17:00 after which a free “after-hackathon-drink” is held where you can interact with many professionals to discuss your (group’s) findings! You don’t have to come all day! You can walk in whenever you want. The event will take place in the Science Center in the Mekelzaal (1st floor).
Brightspace, have you tried it yet?
This week you can enjoy the last days of summer. Next week is the start of the new academic year. New students are flooding the city and slowly campus life starts thriving once again. As an eager TU Delft student, you have of course already checked out all your courses for the first quarter, using Brightspace, the Collaboration & Learning Environment (CLE) of the university.
Brightspace is the new environment that replaces Blackboard. It looks clean and fresh, but Brightspace also brings you new features. Most important is the fact that Brightspace for the TU Delft is implemented in close collaboration with students, focused on the learning experience of students. Second major advantage is responsiveness. Brightspace will work on your laptop, tablet and mobile phone in the same way but optimised for your device. There is an app to get notifications directly on your mobile phone and select content for offline access.
Nevertheless, we are still working on improving Brightspace. During this academic year there is a team that will keep developing the environment to make sure it fits the need of all our students and teachers. This means that not all possibilities Brightspace offers will be available from the start. This also means that you can encounter a problem, bug, or simply something you do not understand. If so, the Brightspace team would very much like to know about this, so they can fix and improve the learning experience. By simply sending an e-mail to brightspace@tudelft.nl, you can help a lot.

New lecture hall at DUWO
You might have noticed the new location code ‘DUWO-CZ’ in your schedule already (If you have checked your schedule, it is still holidays off course). This new lecture hall was newly renovated by DUWO this summer and lies just besides TU Delft campus near the Science Centre at:
Professor Schermerhornstraat 4 (side street of Mijnbouwstraat)

The lecture hall is accessible via the side entrance at the staircase. It is situated at the second floor and can easily be reached by the stairs. If you need the elevator, please go to the reception at the main entrance. They will show you the way.

Remember to deregister when you graduate
Finished with your re-sit exams and waiting for the results? Then you should know that your registration at TU Delft will not be terminated automatically when you are graduated. . When you are graduating, you should file a request for deregistration during the month of graduation. You do not have to wait until graduation; you may submit the request as soon as you can, preferably even a couple of weeks prior to your graduation date.You pay tuition fees up to and including the last month of your registration. Retroactive deregistration is not allowed
So, have you passed your exams and are you officially done studying? Time to deregister and celebrate! Visit the CSA website for more information regarding deregistration and/or a possible refund of tuition fees.
No restitution of tuition fee
If you’ll continue your studies in the 2017-2018 academic year, beware of the changes in the rules for restitution of tuition fee. If you deregister now, you will not be entitled to a refund.

Isn’t it nice, holidays, isn’t it? One more month without study books, assignments, exams and no more lectures! Most of you will spend the holidays elsewhere, at your parents, grandparents, friends or abroad. But for those sunny days in August that you might spend in Delft, we compiled a list of unknown and interesting things to do in the city this summer.
You might have heard that the former prison of Delft still exists. But did you know it is located in the city hall building at the Market? During the summer you can visit the prison where Balthasar Gerards (murderer of Willem van Oranje) was held captive until his death penalty. You can buy your tickets (€3,50) at the tourist information point (Kerkstraat 3) or reserve tickets via info@vvvdelft.nl.
During sunny days you will probably go out to enjoy a beer or two on a terrace in the city. Delft has more than enough delightful spots to enjoy a drink. Experiment Delft is such a place, though it is not located in the city center. You will find it at Lijm en Cultuur at the quay of the Schie. The restaurant is opened from 10-17 Monday to Friday and definitely worth a visit.
At the other side of the Schie, in the ‘Schiehallen’ you can also visit the city’s brewery ‘de Koperen Kat’. From Thursday till Sunday you can visit the ‘Bier beleef lokaal’ to taste one (or more) of the twelve original beers they brew. When you are interested you can also book a guided tour or a workshop on beer brewing.
Maybe you have already heard of it, but beer cafe ‘t Proeflokaal organizes a pubquiz every last thursday of the Month. A nice possibility to show Delft how smart you and your friends are! Make sure to be on time if you want to be able to sit!
“Not another escape room! There are so many already” you might think. Well, first of all, there’s no such thing as too much escape rooms. Second: this one is located in one or Delft’s historic hot spots: the Bagijnetoren. The story is that strange things happened in Delft since they moved the tower in 2011… Someone please solve this mystery and get back to us.
Enjoy the city in August: don’t think about classes (coming in September) and exams (coming too) for at least a couple of weeks! Soak up some sunshine and relax.
Work on sustainable real-life challenges within a Dutch-Nigerian student team
Are you a TU Delft student? Do you want to work in a Dutch-Nigerian team on sustainable entrepreneurial solutions for real-life challenges regarding energy, health, water and food? And are you available in from September till November 2017? Apply!
The Dutch-Nigerian Student Business Challenge is an innovative business case competition where 12 Dutch and 12 Nigerian students will work together on sustainable entrepreneurial solutions for real-life challenges in Nigeria’s energy, health or water-food sector. These challenges will be provided by multinationals with local units in Nigeria such as Unilever, FrieslandCampina, Heineken and Fugro.
The challenge runs from June till November 2017 and is initiated by the Dutch Government. At the end of the challenge you will travel to Nigeria with your team. TU Delft organises the challenge in close collaboration with Passion Incubator in Nigeria. The Dutch-Nigerian student teams are offered a co-creation programme in which the students work together both on- and offline.

Masterclass cultural professor Abdelkader Benali
Doe mee aan de masterclass van de nieuwe cultural professor Abdelkader Benali. Hij gaat met studenten op onderzoek naar pleinen, gebruikers en hun verhalen. Samen wil hij ‘het plein van de toekomst’ creëren.
Meemaken? Laat Abdelkader Benali dan weten wat volgens jou het mooiste plein ter wereld is, en waarom! Hij zoekt 25 gemotiveerde deelnemers uit alle studierichtingen, die graag buiten hun straatje denken.
Vertel dus over jouw mooiste plein – in tekst en/of (bewegend) beeld – en licht je keuze toe.
