Delft like a Local

Delft Like a Local

How do you discover the best places in a city like Delft? The recently published city guide ‘Delft like a Local’ shows spots loved by, you guessed it, locals. It’s a source of inspiration for everyone who wants to enjoy the best places in our city. We interviewed Lianne, one of the creators, about the story behind the guide.

Who created this city guide?
We are two students from Delft with a passion for architecture and travel. We made this city guide together with the local entrepreneurs.

What made you create the Delft Like a Local city guide?
During a trip through Europe last summer, we realised there are few city guides with the spots where locals enjoy the true qualities of a city. Maps at hotels and museums mostly show very touristic and commercial places, and spots from Tripadvisor also tend to become a tourist trap quickly.
Without internet, we needed of a map and by coincidence we found the “Different guide” in Cracow. Two students mapped their favourite local places and showed the city from their own perspective. Exactly what we were looking for! We really enjoyed using their guide and back home we wondered why Delft doesn’t have a map like this. Besides the many tourists here, there are lots of international students who only stay here for a couple months. A map like this is a nice opportunity for them to experience the city just like us! That’s why we decided to start Delft Like a Local.

What was it like to create a city guide?
It actually was quite challenging. We were confident about our concept, as we experienced ourselves how hard it can be to explore a city in a short period of time. But we had to convince the municipality and the entrepreneurs. One thing was sure: it had to be a city guide with only hotspots from our locals’ perspective. So it was important that these entrepreneurs (our favourites) wanted to be a part of it as well. Determination and a lot of enthusiasm made the Delft Like a Local city guide come true within a couple of months.

What are your plans for the future; will you make more of these guides?
To stay up to date we plan to make a new edition of our city guide every six months. By now the Spring//Summer edition 2015 is available for free at more that 100 places in Delft and in six months the new Autumn//Winter edition will be published. We challenge ourselves constantly to create new content and stay interesting for tourists and locals alike. It’s hard to say where this will project will bring us, but the first edition was already so much fun to make that we look forward to the next one!
