From 1 July (00.00AM) to 31 July (23.59PM) the second registration period for minors 2018-2019 will be open. Students who are not selected/placed by lottery draw after the first registration period can register again in Osiris Student in the second registration period for minors who still have places available. A minor can fill up quickly. Make sure you register as soon as possible. Registration is no longer possible after 31 July. Students who are not selected/placed by lottery draw, will receive a personal message by mail about the second registration period. A team of students from our university was the winner in the first phase of the Boeing GoFly competition! In this first phase vertical take-off and landing aircraft for one person was the main objective. The team, named Silverwing, designed an electric, autonomous concept that best resembles a flying motorcycle, and was awarded a $20,000 prize!

With the GoFly Competition Boeing attempts to boost the development of personal aircraft. Top criteria are low noise and small size. The fly-off will be held September 2019 in the United States, where the grand prize is $1,000,000. Among the competitors there are helicopters, jetpacks and more conventional aircraft using wings. Silverwing’s  design includes wings to travel longer distances with a much lower energy consumption.

The prize money will be used for further concept development. In order to win the next two phases, they will need to grow from a small team of eight students to a larger team capable of building and testing the vehicle for the fly-off in 2019.

The interest drink for Team Silverwing will be held on Thursday, June 21 from 18:30 – 21:30 in the TU Delft Aula.

Today, Wednesday 20 June 2018, the faculty of Mechanical Engineering will host the 25th edition of the first-year student Design Competition. Over 75 teams of 7-8 students will face each other to create the most crazy, efficient or ludicrous container handlers, a type of crane design for shipping containers.

All first-year Mechanical Engineering students develop a design in a team, which they then build, test and improve. The theme is different every year, and alternately falls within one of the domains of mechanical engineering. Last year, for example, the students made jumping robots, and the year before a bicycle-driven water pump.

Cranes
This years competition will focus on cranes; moving and stacking more containers in the 5 minute time limit will lead to more points. Instead of using real containers, scale models will be used (100 x 100 x 240 mm). The jury will also look at lightweight constructions, design decisions and the manufacturing process; the entire (disassembled) crane has to be able to fit in a standard moving box!

1. Kraantje Pappie on TU Delft Campus

Dutch hip-hop artist Kraantje Pappie performed at the International Festival of Technology on TU Delft Campus, which took this past weekend (6th – 8th of June)! Next to this performance, there were lots of other activities like escape rooms, food trucks, guest lectures and smaller podia and performances. Want to see more? 2. High-voltage power line through Mekelpark

During the past and coming weeks, excavation and other work will take place to install a new 10 kV high-voltage power line on our campus, in anticipation of future power demands! During this period, some parking places at P-Aula will be unavailable. Read more about the impact here .

Wonder what honours students exactly do? Or interested in participating in the Honours Programme? Come visit the honours project exhibition in the Aula this week! Projects from all faculties have been assembled to show you the possibilities the programme offers. The exhibition will be kicked of with a grand opening in the Aula on Monday, June 11th, at 19:00.

Sunday will be reserved for any extra maintenance.

The Student Research Conference (SRC) is the annual scientific conference which focuses on Bachelor research of young scientific talent! This year’s conference will take place on 9 November at Leiden University College in The Hague.

To participate, hand in your BEP-report (brought down to a maximum of 4 pages) online. It will be assessed by a Review Committee consisting of experienced professors and lecturers. These will give feedback on the papers and select the top 60 papers for presentation on the day of the conference. 

Next to that, your paper might be published in the E-Journal SURE (published by TU Delft).

In addition, you can win one of many prizes, including a € 1000, – cheque!
