Getting ready to have fun with Physics! New free online course
A new free online course helps students prepare for their university studies. Watch the video and spread the word.
As you’ve probably realised, Physics, similar to Calculus, is a crucial subject in many engineering studies, applicable across programs and faculties. But although the laws and principles of physics do not change once a student arrives at university, it can be tough to understand a more formal approach and abstract language.
To help high-school students bridge the gap between their knowledge and the way this is presented and used at university, a new online course – Pre-University Physics – is launching on 7 June. Check out the video!
Formal doesn’t mean boring
This new online course makes university level physics approachable and fun. The exercises and examples draw from a variety of real-life situations that students can easily relate to. For example, how the boundary conditions of waves lead to different tones in various musical instruments.

The MOOC consists of three modules: Mechanics, Electricity & Magnetism, and Waves.
Students get used to the new language but also learn a new way to understand and apply physics: not to take things for granted, but to ask questions about particular situations. “Students come to appreciate that the meaning of a certain symbol – for example m for mass – is not defined globally, but refers to a particular object in a given situation. Asking, “what does m mean?” may at first sound dumb, but it’s often an excellent question”, says Sander Otte, the Professor of Physics at the Faculty of Applied Sciences behind the MOOC.
A winning combo
TU Delft also offers a MOOC on Pre-University Calculus that prepares high-school students for university level mathematics, showing them how it is used in different engineering and science disciplines.
Do you have a friend or know a high-school student who could be interested in these preparatory courses? Tell them to check them out.

Self-tests for students available to order!
As you’ve heard, the government is making free self-tests available to college students and employees. There are many people, especially of your age, who don’t have any symptoms and don’t realize that they are infected. That’s why we encourage you to take advantage of the self-tests, so infections can be detected quickly.
It is voluntary but extremely important
The self-tests are voluntary. You don’t have to show a negative test result to get physical access to education. It is voluntary, but incredibly important to get tested. Self-testing helps us keep track of the virus, which allows for more on campus education.
How can I order them?
Go to the website www.zelftestonderwijs.nl to read more about the ordering process.
When exactly should I take the self-test?
It is recommended that a self-test be taken before participating in on campus education. It is not intended to take a self-test only after you already have symptoms. If you have symptoms or if close contact emerges from source and contact investigations, you should, as before, have yourself tested in a GGD testing facility.
Measures remain in place
The use of the self-test comes in addition to (and not instead of) all measures that already apply at TU Delft, such as: keeping 1.5m distance, frequent hand washing, the use of face masks and staying home in case of symptoms.
Frequently asked questions can be found at www.zelftestonderwijs.nl.

Rotterdam Arts & Sciences Lab Summer Studio!
Rotterdam Arts & Sciences Lab (RASL) would like to invite you to participate in a Transdisciplinary Summer Studio taking place from 9 till 18th of July, where we will explore transdisciplinarity to identify, question, and disrupt existing boundaries and binaries, including the boundaries between artistic and scientific disciplines.
Over the span of ten days, participants with backgrounds in the arts, sciences, humanities, and/or technology will collaborate with our partner Rotterdam Resilient City to engage with a complex societal issue. The goal is to advance creative ways of doing, making, and thinking across the arts, humanities, sciences, and technology. Participants will catalyze collaborative experimentation, creative expression, and scholarly investigation in response to a project brief provided by Rotterdam Resilient City.
For more information visit https://rasl.nu/event/transdisciplinary-summer-studio-2021/ or reach out to Monse Higareda via higareda@euc.eur.nl
