TU Delft TV presents a brand new episode: ‘the Flood Fighter’
Global warming, what will we do to defend us from growing flash floods? This all new episode of TU Delft TV tells us about the research of Dr. ir. Floris Boogaard, the TU Delft Flood Fighter. Global warming is flooding our streets and Boogaard is researching innovative monitoring of sustainable urban drainage systems and management systems that have been implemented 20 years ago.
In order to develop the implementation and prolong the lifespan of sustainable urban drainage systems (suds) the research aims to formulate methods and guidelines for designing, building and maintaining them. To gain knowledge about the the required performance of suds Boogaard has to collect information regarding the quality of stormwater. Since there are several innovative drainage systems in the Netherlands thanks to policy guidelines for design and operation, there is a large database with measurements of stormwater throughout the country.
To test the hydraulic capacity of suds, Boogaard is flooding our streets, as you can see in the video. The video explains more about how this hydraulic capacity and global warming are interconnected. So don’t hesitate, hit that play button and enjoy the informative 2 minute pitch about the Flood Fighter!

So, did you pass your exams and are you now officially done? Time to deregister and celebrate! Visit the CSA website for more information regarding deregistration and/or a possible refund of tuition fees.
Join the Study Abroad Week 2015
Thinking about going abroad for an internship or study? Then don’t forget to visit the activities at your faculty during the Study Abroad Week 2015. From 9 until 14 November you have the chance to learn more about the possibilities for studying or doing an internship abroad. All faculties of Delft University of Technology organise activities where you can find out everything you need to know. Exchange coordinators and students who have been abroad will give informative presentations and several faculties will have a small information market.
Check out the central webpage for more information and look at the faculty flyers to decide where you want to go!
We’ve got a battle-invitation for you

Are you glad your exams are over? Or are you in the mood to learn some more? Make sure to relax your brain this weekend. Only then you will be fresh and ready for an evening full of new facts next week Tuesday!
Tuesday, 10th of November Theater de Veste and TU Delft students organise a ScienceBattle. Do you know what causes one person to knock out drinking every weekend, and another to always do their homework and never be late? Or are you more into sports, and would you like to know TU Delft does research to improve ice skating performances? These questions and more will be answered during the ScienceBattle.
Students and researchers have ten minutes to present their research and afterwards a jury will choose a winner! They will decide who presented their research best within the 10 minutes. The evening starts at 20:30.

It’s almost time for the annual battle between the faculties. We’re taking this festive moment to honour this year’s best graduates and lecturers of TU Delft and recognize their exceptional efforts. Will you join your study association and support your faculty’s best?
Each faculty nominated its own Best graduate and lecturer for the title Best of TU Delft. During the ceremony on 26th November two prizes will be awarded: one for the Best Lecturer and one for the Best Graduate. The best graduates from each faculty will give a 1,5 minute pitch about their graduation project to convince the jury. But also for the lecturers the thrill remains. Who will take the price home for their faculty?

Will you help the Library take the IVI Award home?
The Library Tour App is nominated for the “Innovatie voor Informatie award 2015”. Yearly, the IVI Award is awarded to the Dutch library, archive, museum or similar institution that has developed the most innovative idea to inform their audience. This year the TU Delft Library Tour App is nominated, so help them to win and vote!
The app was developed to familiarize new students with the TU Delft Library. The app takes you on an interactive tour, whenever you like, through the Library and shows you all possibilities, like how to reserve a projectspace or where to find massage chairs. TU Delft Library is the first library in Europe who uses iBeacon-technology, in collaboration with the startup LabWerk. IBeacons are bluetooth-transmitters who send specific targeted information to smarthphones who are nearby. In the TU Delft Library there are iBeacons on 15 different places.
Vote for TU Delft in the SURF Innovation Challenge
The SURF Innovation Challenge challenged students and lecturers to hand in a video of their innovations. Of course people within TU Delft participated. Now it’s up to you to vote for your favorite idea. Hint….. vote for the following two duo’s:
- Hans Hellendoorn and Kerim Haccou (3mE) expressed their wish that students should be able to learn from their mistakes. Exams should be not only be able to tell them that there is room to grow, but show them in what particular part they need to grow. Students should be aware of their strengths and weaknesses. In short, the potential to grow has to become insightful for students.
- Another student-lecturer couple participating in the challenge were Ate Snijders and Dirk Klijn (Architecture). They designed a model to show students how the forces within complex building structures work. Colored led lights show different forces with different loads.
Watch all the videos here and vote! You can review the videos until November 3rd and decide which 20 innovations will make it into the second round. Eventually 10 duo’s will be rewarded with €10.000. This reward will give participants the possibility to carry out experiments, using innovating ICT applications to stimulate personalized and flexible education.
Did you notice the big blue billboards?
You might have seen the blue billboards along the Michiel the Ruyterweg: ‘Heb oog voor een ander’, in English: ‘Look out for one another’. Since the start of the academic year the amounts of cyclists on campus have increased massively, especially during peek hours and in-between lectures. Because the cyclists have priority on the Michiel the Ruyterweg these flows of cyclists tend to annoy other people in traffic, with emphasis on drivers. So we have to look out for one another, give priority to cars once in a while, cycle with a max of two persons side by side and show where you want to go, we all know the traffic rules, now let us also use them.
The campaign also aims to draw attention to alternative and maybe even quicker routes for cyclists to take to several destinations on campus. On the ‘Hooiweg’ a banner shows students the shortest routes. Time to try something new!
Ladies, start dating in Delft
The Dutch TV channel RTL developed a tool to determine the female-male ratio in Dutch cities. For every man there is a woman somewhere on this earth, but Delft gives men a hard time. The tool shows that men in cities Eindhoven and Enschede are having a hard time finding their match too. No suprise, all three cities offer a Technical University. Delft tops the three with 60 women on each 100 men. Do you want to know where you can find a women dominated city? Visit Utrecht! They have 160 pair of heels for every 100 ties. Also in Amsterdam and Leiden you can find more women than men.
RTL tried to be cupido and visited Utrecht and Delft to match young students. Curious? Take a look at the video (in Dutch).
Take a break from studying, visit Impact! at the Library
Are you studying for your exams, and do you study on campus? Or are you one of the rare persons who have actually nothing to do in the following weeks? For both of you, we have a nice suggestion for a break, or an entertaining afternoon.
From the 14th of October till 16th of December, the TU Delft Library (where you are already anyway, right?) hosts an exhibition ‘The Impact!’. This exhibition shows the final work of a series of workshops initiated by Shannon Spruit and Zoë Robaey of the Philosophy of Technology group. In these workshops TU Delft students met with local artists and philosophers with the goal of producing a visual work reflecting ethical aspects of their future work and the role of technology in society. The exhibition evolves around art, experience and interaction and is meant to get the discussion going about the role of engineers in our society.
So, get your friends together and take a look at the artworks. Then you can get back to your work inspired. More information? Click here.
